Grateful for Scholarships

FLASHBACK SERIES: Blog posts written during my medical school days at Pacific Northwest University - College of Osteopathic Medicine

by Kim Ha Wadsworth, OMS III

This morning, I was honored to accept my Zirkle Fruit Osteopathic Scholarship presented by CEO Mark Zirkle at Zirkle Fruit Company's headquarters in Selah, WA. It was highly competitive this year with the most applicants that ZFC has ever received.

I'm so grateful for all of the support and help from my husband Stewart, my sisters–Bianconi and Tivonne–who gave feedback on my draft essay, my letter writers–Lori Gibbons, Erin Hepner and Dr. Adam Hoverman, DO–who submitted letters of recommendation for me, Laura Pendleton who provided advice and coordination of documents on my behalf, and several PNWU administrators, including President Dr. Keith Watson, who were present when I received my scholarship check.

We were very impressed with Mr. Zirkle and his company's commitment to "community and employees first." During the busiest time of the year, the employees we saw on the corporate campus, processing plant and cold storage facility were all smiling and greeted us in passing.

I feel humbled to receive this important scholarship from a local employer and benefactor. This gives me even more incentive to work hard to make a difference in the local community and to get accepted to a rural medicine residency program! Zirkle Fruit Company is a shining example of great leadership, integrity and magnanimity. I hope I will serve others well to deserve carrying the prestige of this ZFC scholarship.

In late August, I was also notified that I won the Tylenol® Future Care Scholarship. It's a national merit-based award meant for undergraduates and graduates who are enrolled in any healthcare program, including public health, health education, med school, nursing, and pharmacy school. Each year, they select winners based on college GPA, essay content, and excellence in academics, leadership, community service and research. I feel privileged to be among the 10 students selected to receive this scholarship at the $10,000 level.

Thank you to Zirkle Fruit Company and Tylenol® for helping make my educational dreams come true!
