Last year I shared an overview of fall vaccines for respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV (see that post here). This year brings some important changes—especially around COVID-19. The FDA has narrowed eligibility nationally, but Washington state is continuing with broader access. Here’s what you need to know:
What the New COVID-19 Vaccine Targets
- The 2025–2026 formula was updated to target the LP.8.1 sub-strain of the JN.1 lineage, which has become the dominant variant this year.
Federal vs. State Eligibility
- Federal guidance now restricts updated COVID-19 boosters primarily to those 65 and older or under-65 individuals with certain health conditions.
- Washington State, in contrast, continues to recommend vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older, including pregnant individuals—maintaining broader access across the board.
Where to Get Vaccinated in Washington
- Washington pharmacies can now offer COVID-19 vaccines without an individual prescription, thanks to a recent standing order by the WA Department of Health.
- Consider independent pharmacies, which may provide more personalized and accessible service.
- Other options include local clinics, hospitals, and the Adult Vaccine Program (AVP), which covers uninsured or underinsured adults.
- You can use Vaccines.gov to locate available vaccination sites across Thurston County and beyond.
Costs & Coverage
- Insurance coverage for the updated vaccine is still under review pending federal (CDC/ACIP) recommendations, as of this posting. However, Medicare covers eligible seniors.
- Washington’s AVP helps uninsured or underinsured adults access the vaccine at low or no cost; administrative fees may be waived for those unable to pay.
Track Local Respiratory Illness Activity in WA and Thurston County
- Thurston County offers a Respiratory Illness Dashboard through its Public Health & Social Services site, where you can monitor weekly trends in COVID-19, flu, and RSV—including emergency department visit rates and current transmission activity.
- WA State also maintains a broader Respiratory Illness Data Dashboard, covering trends in virus spread, hospital use, vaccination coverage, and variants—updated regularly for regional monitoring.
- These tools are invaluable for gauging when respiratory viruses are surging—helping you time vaccination or take precautions more effectively.
